Racism against AfroColombians
Nowadays racism has continued to disadvantage the Afro-Colombian population, as evidenced by economic disparities, a large educational performance gap, and under-representation in politics. Its a very sad and dissapointing situation because they deserve equal rights and opportunities as everyone else. The fact that most of them live in poverty, cant go to college and are not respected by their fellows is unnaceptable.
It is important to remember that Colombia is a multicultural country because of the mixture of races that integrates it and there is no reason to discriminate others because of their color skin. AfroColombians form an important part of the country, notable Afro-Colombians include scientists like Raul Cuero, writers like Manuel Zapata Olivella and politicians: Piedad Córdoba, Paula Marcela Moreno Zapata, and Luis Gilberto Murillo, Miss Colombia 2001 winner and fashion model Vanessa Alexandra Mendoza Bustos, first Olympic gold medal winner for the country Maria Isabel Urrutia, etc.
We cannot ignore that these people are our brothers and sisters and we share a common history. We should accept them completely as part of our society like every other ethnic group and recognize them as men and women just like us, with the same responsabilities and human rights.
