Bangkok's Mexican Gangsters
Cultural appropriation is the adoption of ideas, symbols, artifacts, image, sound, objects, forms or styles from other cultures, from art history, from popular culture or other aspects of human made visual or non visual culture; Nowadays, this practice is very common and good example for it is “Mexican gangsters”, a new tendency appeared in Bangkok , it is a brotherhood of style-conscious men who bond over baggy white shirts and gothic-baroque tattoos, they imitate the style of Mexican criminals or "Gangsters"
Young Thai men have adopted the hairstyle, the way of dressing, the using of tattoos and the hip-hop attitude of the Mexican gangs.
Despite of it is a normal and nonviolent trend due to Thai gangsters are professionals, they have normal lives, and they like to do this because they can enjoy with their friends, it can be percieved as a negative practice and people could reject them because Mexicans (the original culture) are criminals that rob, kill and are drug dealers.
I learned about the video that when a group of people is going to follow some kind of subculture, they should have depth knowledge of what they are going to follow because in some cases for example in this, they dont know the real background. However, I consider that each person has the right of follow whatever they want and dress as they feel confortable and people must treat them respectfully and accept that everyone has their own way to think and while they dont hurt anybody or do bad things there is no problem with that and we should respect them.
